Roof Collapsed with Spectator 'Watchlor Foot Ball ' Sax Frahcibco, Oal, November 89. Thirteen people were killed and fully fifty badly Injured by the eolla) is of tbe roof of the Pacific Glass Works, on Fif teenth Street, today, while It was crowd ed with men and boys watching a foot ball game on tha field adjoining. v About seventy-five people fell through the roof upon the red hot furnaces and glass, vats below,' All were horribly burned, and It Is feared that In addition to the deaths already reported, there will be several more. Two hundred men and boys' had gath ered on the slieel-lrou roof of the glass works to obtsln a clear view of the an nual foot ball game between Stanfoid and the University of California.' About twenty minutes after the game hid commenoed there was a crash, plainly audible from the football grounds, and a portion of the crowd on the roof went down. The fires In the furnaces had been started for the first time today, and tbe Tats were full of liquid glass. It was upon this that the victims fell. Some were killed Instantly and others were slowly routed to destb. The few who missed the furnaces rolled off, and to gether with workmen In the glass works saved tbe lives of many by pushing them away from their horrible resting places. Tbe police and Ore department were soon at hand and every patrol wagon, and ambulance In theeity was summoned They -were not enough, and express wagons and private carriages were press ed Into service to carry off the dead and the wounded. Many of the Injured were unconscious, while others were hurried. shrieking with agony, to the hospitals The Southern Pacific Rsilway Hospital, only two blocks away, wasqnlckly filled About forty wounded were la'ten there. Others were sent to St, Luke's Hospital and the city receiving hospital to prlvsie residences and other places. Tbe roof of the glasa factory was not 300 feet away f root the font lull field but the twenty thousand people watch ing tbe game were too interested la .the gsme to notice what had happened. waa only when the ushers went through the vast crowd calling for doctors that it became known that there bad been an accident, Hundreds of people loft the grounds snd gsthered about the gl. works. News of tbe disaster spresd quickly. The police kept crowds back while tbe patrol wagons and ambulances dashed through tno streets oa their wsy to snd from the boi pltats. Blgbty-fvo persons, more or less In jorad, hsva been taken to the various hospitals or removed to their homes. Most of those killed or injured were boys between alna and sixteen years of age.
